face the red

last week, i had the pleasure of attending a newly released short film,
entitled "face the red," before the premiere of iron man 3.
the event was put on by ss+k and salt, a college debt management company.
the short film debuted in seattle, boston, chicago,
tampa, and washington dc.
i was honored to have had the chance to attend!

the eight minute film, a sort of psychological thriller,
follows a college student as she is accosted by "the red" (or red smoke) -
representative of the immense pressure she feels from her student loans.
this student is emblematic of any current or future student, as well as recent
graduates, who face (or will face) the burden of student loan debt;
it is inescapable and incredibly daunting.

while the depiction of debt as a red smoke could be seen as exaggerated,
i found it to be seemingly accurate.
financial stress can be all-consuming.
the pressure placed upon high school and college students to
attend a reputable university (despite the cost),
find a major that aligns with their passions,
and then pray to find a job upon graduation can be unrealistic.
often, the end result is a commendable degree accompanied
by debt, more debt, a job waiting tables, and living on your parent's couch.
not exactly what we all hope for, right?

however, ss+k and salt offer a new potential solution - debt management
from american student assistance in boston.
their site helps current students and recent graduates
locate scholarships, internships, potential mentors in a variety
of career fields, and tools to better manage student loan debt.
the prevalence of student loan debt is disconcerting.
however, it does not have to be as scary or debilitating as it initially feels
in the short film.

*thank you again for inviting me to this premiere!
